Postsecondary Plans of Nevada High School Seniors, 1988. A Report on the 1988 Statewide Survey of Nevada High School Seniors.
Fox, Warren H.; And Others
In spring 1988, the University of Nevada (UN) conducted a survey to determine the postsecondary plans of the state's high school seniors. Questionnaires were administered in class, requesting information on demographic characteristics, evaluation of high school experiences, work experience, postsecondary plans, factors affecting college choice, and impressions of the UN system. Study findings, based on responses from 6,760 of the total population of 10,588 seniors, included the following: (1) 61% of the seniors planned to enroll in a postsecondary educational program in the year following graduation, and an additional 22% planned to continue their education at some future time; (2) of the students planning to continue their education, 62% were interested in attending a four-year college and 38% were interested in a two-year institution; (3) 35% of the college-bound students planned to attend an out-of-state institution; (4) 76% of the respondents had been employed during their senior year in high school; (5) 85% planned to work to pay for their college education, 78% expected their parents or other relatives to provide financial assistance, and 66% expected assistance from grants, scholarships, or loans; and (6) 73% had made the decision to continue their education before their senior year. The survey instrument is appended. (AAZC)
