Tourette's Syndrome: Isn't that the Foul Mouth Disease?
De Lange, Naydene; Olivier, M. A. J.; Meyer, L. W.
Early Child Development and Care, v173 n6 p613-635 Dec 2003
The myths and misconceptions about Tourette's Syndrome (TS), as illustrated by the collective title of these three parts of this article, have far-reaching implications for the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder. The aims of the articles are to address and rectify misconceptions, to create an awareness and better understanding of the disorder, to stimulate discussion and, if possible, to pave the way for effective treatment. In order to realise these aims, the article is presented as follows. Part 1 focuses on the diagnosis of TS with specific reference to diagnostic criteria and the diverse manifestations of the disorder. Part 2 is a case study to illustrate the impact of a delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Part 3 addresses problems related to the treatment of TS and proposes a multi-modal strategy to alleviate the problems that persons with TS often experience. (Contains 1 figure.)
