Knowledge, Practice, and Behavioral Outcomes from an Enduring Continuing Medical Education Activity
Makowski, Celina M.
ProQuest LLC, D.H.A. Dissertation, Capella University
Continuing Medical Education is a conceptual framework utilizing Edward Deming's plan-do-study-act as a means to measure CME activity outcomes, which is similar in nature to Ernest Stringer's action research think-look-act cycle that was used as the design of the action research study. This action research study incorporated Moore's Levels of Outcomes to determine the effectiveness of an evidence-based, unbiased enduring continuing medical education activity on the topic of genetically modified organisms in changing participant's knowledge as well as professional and personal behaviors. Standard to CME, surveys were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data to determine change in knowledge and behaviors. Measuring change in knowledge was determined through the provision of pretest and posttest questions on the CME activity topic for the participants to answer. Completion of a post-activity evaluation determined the effectiveness of the educational activity and evaluated the participant's change in clinical practice through specific questions pertaining to how change in clinical practice would occur and if barriers were present that would prevent change. A post-post educational activity survey provided to participants approximately three weeks after the completion of the education activity measured how the education activity affected their professional and personal behaviors, including determining if participants made use of the provided patient education brochure. Although the number of physicians, physician assistants, advanced registered nurse practitioners and other hospital employees that participated in the CME activity was statistically insignificant, Moore's Levels of Outcomes one through five were achieved that included measurement of participation, satisfaction, learning, competence, and performance.
