"On the Grind": Narrative Stories of Black Collegians Using Hip-Hop Culture as a Pedagogical Method of Thriving and Persisting at Predominantly White Institutions
Courtney B. Morris
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Central Michigan University
This narrative inquiry research study explores the ways in which hip-hop culture functions as a form of resistance to the oppressive and traditional spaces that constitute predominantly white institutions (PWIs) of higher education. Despite the prevalence and power of hip-hop among Black collegians, little is known about how hip-hop can assist with navigating spaces that traditionally are unwelcoming for students of color. The study aims to understand how Black collegians who currently attend or have recently graduated from a PWI theorize and disrupt the oppression and anti-Blackness that they encounter at their institution, while examining the measures needed to create success and a sense of belonging within the Black experience at PWIs. The study argues that hip-hop culture, as a space of art that exudes liberation, power, and awareness, can provide Black collegians with the necessary tools to not only survive but also thrive in all spaces they encounter, while also contributing positively to their academic and social success. The study suggests that incorporating hip-hop culture into higher education can create avenues for Black students to attain degrees and can help disrupt anti-Blackness at PWIs.
