Vicarious Occupational Posttraumatic Growth
Moran, Larry
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Illinois University
Traditional studies of posttraumatic growth center on the individual or close family members as they deal with traumatic events. The current study examines workers who experience posttraumatic growth when a coworker has a traumatic experience. The participants in this study were firefighters in suburban Cook County, Illinois. Participants were given a demographic survey along with the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory to test for a relationship between posttraumatic growth and the type of crisis, type of relationship with their coworker, and their type of employment. The findings of this research did not show a relationship between firefighters and type of crisis or a relationship with their coworker; however, the type of employment was found to be statistically significant with the spiritual change and relating to others subscales of the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory. Future research should be limited to a specific type of crisis, with a consideration of performing a confirmatory factor analysis. Ethnographic research should also be considered in order to fully explain this cultural phenomenon. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
