The data presented in this summary (released in advance of their publication) are derived from four surveys of academic science and engineering (S/E) activities conducted anually by the National Science Foundation's Division of Science Resources Studies, Universities, and Nonprofit Institutions Studies Groups: (1) Survey of Scientific and Engineering Expenditures at Universities and Colleges, fiscal year (FY) 1984 (expenditure survey); (2) Survey of Federal Support to Universities, Colleges, and Selected Nonprofit Institutions, FY 1984 (federal support survey); (3) Survey of Scientific and Engineering Personnel Employed at Universities and Colleges, January 1985 (personnel survey); and Survey of Graduate Science and Engineering Students and Post-doctorates, Fall 1984 (graduate student survey). In expenditures, personnel, and graduate student surveys, data are submitted by institutions of higher education; data on federal obligations to academic institutions are collected directly from the major funding agencies. A brief introduction to the data (which are presented in 29 tables) is included, with information on the higher education universe surveyed as well as information on samples used in the four surveys.
