The scope and place of population education in our present educational system, together with current organized activities in this field, are summarized in this pamphlet. Population education is defined as the process by which the student investigates and explores the nature and meaning of population processes, population characteristics, the causes of population change, and most important, the consequences of these processes, characteristics, and changes for himself, his family, his society, and the world. The needs of population education are assessed as well as recommendations submitted by the Commission on Population and the American Future. In reviewing the activities and programs of population oriented groups, brief descriptions of their population education efforts are given for The Population Council; Population Reference Bureau; Population Education Project, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York; Population Curriculum Study, University of Delaware; Population Education Project, Indiana University; Center for Studies in Education and Development, Harvard University, Massachusetts; Center for Population and Environmental Education, University of North Carolina; and an ecology/ population program at Weston (Massachusetts) High School.
