In recent years, the call to diversity law enforcement departments generated attention to the challenges of recruiting and retaining minorities. Understanding the perspectives of minority law enforcement officers' transitional phases from civilian to front-line enforcement responsibilities has not been fully assessed. The purpose of this study was to examine the career transitional processes of minority law enforcement officers. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with minority law enforcement officers who represented five police training academies and six police departments in the Midwest region of the United States. The findings include minority officers sharing sentiments of mattering and marginality, silenced voices, and resiliency. Participants also expressed the importance of police leadership setting the expectations in police cultures to validate minority officers are vested members of the culture. The recommendations suggest police leaders employ policies and practices that are consistent and intentional in addressing factors that impact diversity, inclusion and equity in police organizations.
