Making and Using Creative Play Equipment.

This book contains descriptions and illustrations for 49 pieces of handmade or improvised equipment suitable for children. Included with each piece are: (1) information pertaining to the objectives for using the equipment; (2) necessary materials and instructions for construction; (3) suggested individual, partner, and/or group activities for use; and (4) comments concerning safety, availability of materials, equipment modification, and storage. Chapter I presents and overview of the book's objectives. Play equipment and activities for promoting the development of the eight basic locomotor skills are presented in Chapter II. Chapter III discusses equipment and activities to enhance the five manipulative skills. Chapter IV describes equipment and activities that encourage the development of selected perceptual-motor skills. Chapter V offers equipment for day-to-day organizational uses. In addition, three appendices are included that discuss play formations, obstacle course designs, and the benefits derived from each activity. A bibliography is included. (JD)
