Excerpts from Movement-Based Learning: Academic Concepts and Physical Activity for Ages Three through Eight
Clements, Rhonda L.; Schneider, Sharon L.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v19 n2 p31-32 Nov-Dec 2005
This book is intended for all who touch the lives of children within childcare settings and the lower grades in elementary schools, whether that be physical educators, classroom teachers, or daycare specialists who are searching for innovative "use-it-today" ideas for teaching young children. Teacher trainers in physical education will find original movement content presented in an easy-to-use format, and teacher trainers in early childhood and elementary school education will discover two innovative approaches to teaching many core skills and concepts mandated in their curriculum. Individuals working within an inclusive setting or in a self-contained classroom can easily adapt the activities to meet the requirements found in Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and 504 Accommodation Plans. Recess or lunchtime specialists, after-school specialists, and parents who homeschool their children will also find the contents of this book dynamic and appropriate because of the noncompetitive nature of the activities. Members of parent-teacher organizations will be delighted that the majority of the learning experiences do not require equipment, or a specialized setting. Finally, it is the hope of the authors that curriculum specialists and school administrators will find novel concepts and activities to enhance their existing programs. Their goal is to provide original and innovative content that will increase the child's understanding through movement-based learning.
