Pre-K Expansion: Bad News or Good for Existing Providers?
Doggett, Libby
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n168 p6-8 Mar-Apr 2006
Pre-K Now was created as a part of a major grant-making strategy of The Pew Charitable Trusts to assist national and state leaders to design and implement sound, research-based policies that support voluntary access to high-quality pre-K for all three- and four-year-old children in the United States. Pre-K Now's vision is a nation in which every child enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. The question of how increased access to pre-K will affect private child care providers is addressed in this article. More than half of the states already have some version of diverse methods of providing pre-K education, using both public schools and community-based providers; and in several states, more than half of the pre-K children are educated in non-school settings. These diverse systems hold the promise of accomplishing many critical goals all at once, including broader access, inclusion of child care providers, faster start-up time, more efficient use of public and private investments, and improving quality across all settings.
