The Relationships of Reading Comprehension, Conservation Ability, Auditory Discrimination, and Visual-Motor Development of Third-Grade Pupils.
Kent, Anita Hutt
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences and relationships among reading comprehension, conservation ability, auditory discrimination, and the visual-motor development of third grade pupils. Of 510 third grade subjects, 96 remained after exclusions were made for intelligence, vision, hearing, and age range. Twenty-four boys and 24 girls were in the high reading comprehension group; 24 girls and 24 boys were in the low reading comprehension group. Twelve significant findings led to the following conclusions: (1) high reading comprehension subjects surpassed subjects in the low reading comprehension group in visual-motor development, (2) high reading comprehension female subjects surpassed low reading comprehension female subjects in visual-motor development and conservation ability, (3) relationships between reading comprehension and visual-motor development were found with all subjects, (4) relationships between auditory discrimination and reading comprehension were found with all subjects, (5) relationships between reading comprehension and conservation ability were found with all subjects.
