When Going Right Is Going Wrong: Education for Critical Democratic Patriotism
Waltzer, Kenneth; Heilman, Elizabeth
Social Studies, v96 n4 p156 Jul-Aug 2005
A report from Thomas B. Fordham Foundation reveals the complaints of some social studies educators regarding the teaching of American history in US classrooms. Students, they say, should study an American history that emphasizes "true heroes of the American story." Further, these educators believe that students should be freed from the alleged globalist influence in social studies curricula, which, in its emphases on multicultural celebration, cultural relativism, and "transnational progressivism," aims at substituting another set of loyalties for those of American patriotic pride. In this article, the authors seek to counter that ideological foolishness, acknowledging some claims in common with conservatives about contemporary education and about some tendencies in multicultural and global education but identifying the shoddy character of the conservative critique. Seeing the schools through the lens of right wing "patriotic pride" leads, the authors think, to a misinterpretation of the American experience and the true meaning of patriotism and misreads the political, moral, pragmatic, and imaginative dimensions of education for democratic citizenship.
