All state-supported two- and four-year institutions in Tennessee and a sample of nine other southern states were surveyed. Responses from 84 of 95 indicated that salaries for noncredit instructors were determined largely by course-related factors and credentials; written guidelines could strengthen policy unless developed narrowly; and a sliding salary schedule might be a reasonable alternative.
