Conviction of the Heart: Implementing Leave-No-Trace Principles in Outdoor Recreation
Morley, Laurie; Chase, Matthew R.; Day, Ralph W.; Lawhon, Ben
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v79 n7 p29-34 Sep 2008
As a result of the increased interest in nontraditional activities, such as mountain biking and backpacking, many public schools are incorporating outdoor education into their curriculum. However, little attention has been given to educating students about the impacts that outdoor activities can have on the environment. It is important that schools educate students and families about environmental stewardship by incorporating Leave No Trace principles into the curriculum. This article includes teaching tips and resources that physical educators can use to implement these principles in outdoor education units to help students become well-informed citizens, as well as environmental stewards who behave ethically while engaging in physical activities in the great outdoors.
