Increasing the Awareness of Middle School Developmentally Delayed Students, Parents, and Educators Concerning Supplemental Security Income.
Jarzab, Jacquelyn L.
This practicum project was designed to educate developmentally delayed students, parents, and educators concerning the availability of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) through application to the Social Security Administration. Results of a survey of school staff and parents showed a need for information dissemination concerning SSI funds. The project's goals were: (1) to provide the targeted groups with information concerning the availability of funds and application procedures, and (2) to help parents apply for the funds. Necessary information was incorporated into the lesson plans of educable mentally handicapped students in a middle school. The practicum resulted in increased awareness of the SSI program by the 14 participating students and their parents and educators, and three students were declared eligible for funding when their newly informed parents submitted applications.
