Interactive Videodisc Potential and Implications for Public Television. A Special Research Project Report.

An overview of the current status of the videodisc industry and observations on future directions for videodisc technology are presented in this paper. Information was drawn from interviews with presenters at the 1984 Nebraska Videodisc Symposium and the February 1985 Society for Applied Technology Conference, discussions with hardware manufacturers, and in-depth interviews with seven leading videodisc developers. Topics covered include: (1) applications of videodisc technology; (2) producers of videodiscs; (3) size of the videodisc industry; (4) cost and instructional effectiveness; (5) hardware characteristics, including a videodisc player comparison chart; (6) authoring systems; (7) the team approach in videodisc design and production; (8) the cost of production; (9) review of the 1984 Nebraska Videodisc Symposium, "The Industry Comes of Age;" and (10) public television station involvement in videodisc production. Descriptions of the videodisc developers interviewed, including their major achievements and concerns, are appended. (MES)
