Aesthetic Dissonance: The Impact of Viewing Fine Art in a Science Museum
Greenslit, Jana; Price, Aaron; Malone, Tiffany
Journal of Museum Education, v46 n2 p202-215 2021
At the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, an annual art exhibition with no ties to science content provides an opportunity to explore how juxtaposing an art gallery experience within a science museum could impact audience engagement with science thereafter. Prior evidence suggests that art gallery-based workshops have value for science education -- for example, by encouraging observation or critical reflection. To understand how visiting an art gallery could impact engagement with science content, this study compared the experiences of two groups of visitors: those who viewed the art exhibition before entering a science exhibition, and those who viewed the same science exhibition only. Results indicate that seeing art before a science exhibition could cause guests to be more drawn to art-based science content, though more research is required to support this hypothesis.
