Enterprise Resource Planning in Small and Medium Enterprises: Examining the Business Case

Prior research pertaining to the behaviors that related to the acceptance and use of technology was primarily focused on individual end users with little concentration on the collective organizational perspective. Infrastructure changes in organizations developed as they transitioned from serviceable information technology systems to enterprise resource planning systems as solutions for organizational change. The projection of growth promised by enterprise resource planning systems had proliferated in research literature, and had prompted the interest of owners and managers of small and medium enterprises that led to the assessment of change management issues that pertained to the adoption and acceptance of ERP technology. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model was used to investigate the factors that influenced enterprise resource planning acceptance in SMEs in the West, Mountain, Central, and Eastern regions of the United States. The instrument gathered data from owners, managers, and information technology professionals in United States SMEs identified as small businesses that employed 0 to 20 employees, and medium businesses that employed 21 to 99 employees. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 23 software which measured central tendency, skewness and kurtosis tests, and multiple regression analysis that determined the significance of the dependent variables and the independent variables. The results indicated the key role of seven independent variables (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, anxiety, attitude toward using technology, and self-efficacy) of the UTAUT model, and the moderator variable (governance) as influencing factors on the key role owners and managers played in their behavioral intention, and use behavior of enterprise resource planning systems in the United States.
