Peer reviewedCudeck, Robert – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1991
Two algorithms that automatically select subsets of variables (PACE algorithm) and reference variables (Fabin estimators), respectively, used for the noniterative estimators are presented. The PACE algorithm is based on a nonsymmetric matrix sweep operator. A Monte Carlo experiment compares the relative performance of these estimators and others.…

Peer reviewedSchweizer, Karl – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
A mathematical formula is introduced for the effect of integrating data. A method is then derived to eliminate the effect from correlations of variables, including mean composites, thus allowing for a clustering algorithm that requires allocation of variables according to the magnitude of their correlations. Examples illustrate the procedure. (SLD)

Peer reviewedFlusser, Peter; Hanna, Dorothy – Mathematics and Computer Education, 1991
Demonstrated is the use of BASIC computer programs to simulate a binomial experiment and test a simple statistical hypothesis. The theoretical results are reached with the third programing attempt. All results, as well as computer programs, are included. (JJK)

Peer reviewedFouladi, Rachel T.; Steiger, James H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
The test proposed by Brien, Venables, and Mayo (1984), endorsed by Silver and Dunlap, and supported by computer software that they developed is not a proper test for multivariate independence. A revised appraisal is suggested for the Silver and Dunlap results. (SLD)

Peer reviewedMount, Robert E.; Schumacker, Randall E. – Journal of Outcome Measurement, 1998
A Monte Carlo study was conducted using simulated dichotomous data to determine the effects of guessing on Rasch item fit statistics and the Logit Residual Index. Results indicate that no significant differences were found between the mean Rasch item fit statistics for each distribution type as the probability of guessing the correct answer…

Peer reviewedFeinstein, Zachary S. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1995
The closed-interval signed area (CSA) and closed-interval unsigned area (CUA) statistics were studied by Monte Carlo simulation to detect differential item functioning (DIF) when the reference and focal groups had different parameter distributions. Different behaviors of the CSA and CUA as functions of the parameters are discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedReise, Steven P. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1995
Psychometric issues pertinent to the application of an item-response-theory-based person-fit (response aberrancy) detection statistic in the personality measurement domain were explored using Monte Carlo methods. Recommendations are made about proper implementation of person-fit statistics in personality measurement. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWang, Shudong; Wang, Tianyou – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2001
Evaluated the relative accuracy of the weighted likelihood estimate (WLE) of T. Warm (1989) compared to the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE), expected a posteriori estimate, and maximum a posteriori estimate. Results of the Monte Carlo study, which show the relative advantages of each approach, suggest that the test termination rule has more…

Peer reviewedEnders, Craig K. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2001
Examined the performance of a recently available full information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimator in a multiple regression model with missing data using Monte Carlo simulation and considering the effects of four independent variables. Results indicate that FIML estimation was superior to that of three ad hoc techniques, with less bias and less…

Yoder, Paul J.; Tapp, Jon – Journal of Behavioral Education, 2004
Time-window sequential analyses test whether a target behavior occurs within a temporal window (e.g., within 2 seconds) after an antecedent behavior more than is expected by chance. This type of question is common when we need to know how one person or event may immediately affect another event or person in the natural environment. Theoretically,…

Abdel-fattah, Abdel-fattah A. – 1994
The accuracy of estimation procedures in item response theory was studied using Monte Carlo methods and varying sample size, number of subjects, and distribution of ability parameters for: (1) joint maximum likelihood as implemented in the computer program LOGIST; (2) marginal maximum likelihood; and (3) marginal Bayesian procedures as implemented…

Dimitrov, Dimiter M. – 1996
A Monte Carlo approach is proposed, using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) programming language, for estimating reliability coefficients in generalizability theory studies. Test scores are generated by a probabilistic model that considers the probability for a person with a given ability score to answer an item with a given difficulty…

Fan, Xitao; And Others – 1997
A Monte Carlo study was conducted to assess the effects of some potential confounding factors on structural equation modeling (SEM) fit indices and parameter estimates for both true and misspecified models. The factors investigated were data nonnormality, SEM estimation method, and sample size. Based on the fully crossed and balanced 3x3x4x2…

This paper compares various methods of smoothed equipercentile equating and linear equating in the random groups equating design. Three presmoothing methods (based on the beta binomial model, four-parameter beta binomial model and a log-linear model) are compared to postsmoothing using cubic splines, linear equating and unsmoothed equipercentile…

Kim, Seock-Ho – 1998
The accuracy of the Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure, Gibbs sampling, was considered for estimation of item and ability parameters of the one-parameter logistic model. Four data sets were analyzed to evaluate the Gibbs sampling procedure. Data sets were also analyzed using methods of conditional maximum likelihood, marginal maximum likelihood,…
