The technical subject matter of the Quartermaster rating is presented in this training manual written to prepare men of the Navy and Naval Reserve for advancement examinations. The manual includes eleven chapters. Discussed are commonly used methods and procedures of operating magnetic compasses and gyrocompasses, determining a ship's position, accomplishing the duties of a petty officer in charge and a navigator assistant, and observing the weather. Special topics are included to acquaint the reader with the publishing and issuing activities in navigation; knowledge of administering security; fundamentals of electronic and celestial navigation and dead reckoning; information about working for advancement; and international, inland, and pilot regulations for prevention of collision at sea. An edited reprint of an article published on the reverse side of the June 1966 Pilot Chart of the North Atlantic is also given as an appendix under the heading of navigational hints.
