ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Piedmont University
This study examined the perspectives of Haitian parents on parental involvement and barriers faced for involvement in the schooling of their elementary aged children. Epstein's (2019) Six Types of Parental Involvement was the framework for the research. A phenomenological approach to present the experiences of seven first generation Haitian parents in the Metro-Atlanta area was utilized. Seidman's (2019) three interview series was followed and included three 60 minutes semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Coding and thematic analysis using MAXQDA (2021), identified the following themes: Haitian parents make multiple sacrifices because education is a necessity; Haitian parents believe partnering with the school is essential; Haitian parents believe it is vital to support their children for academic success; Haitian parents believe communication with teachers is essential for student growth; Differences in education prevents Haitian parents from being involved. The study revealed Haitian parents care about the education of their children. This desire to support their children often required selfless acts of sacrifice in order for their children to receive an education and a chance for a better future. Findings suggest they struggle to attend school functions due to their various family and work commitments. The study showed Haitian parents also attempt to gain an understanding of the American culture and society which will impact the future of their children.
