The factors involved in the decisions of physicians to locate in Rockford, IL were examined. Questions were asked concerning faculty status, factors influencing practice location decisions, and perceived advantages of association with a medical education center. A survey of the tenure status of clinical dental faculty, faculty turnover rates, sources of new faculty, and future projections are discussed. Projections indicate a lower turnover rate, increased tenure denial, more stringent application of criteria, and the development of dual tracks for clinical dental faculty. (MLW)

The problem of tenured medical school faculty whose productivity and motivation decrease after attaining tenure is addressed. It is suggested that departments withdraw institutional support and refuse merit salary increments to deal with the situation. A modification of tenure policy is also proposed. (JMD)
