This report details a visit to China by a delegation from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The 3-week visit included 14 schools in 8 cities. The report discusses mathematics curricula at the primary and middle schools, as well as mathematics teacher preparation. The summary and conclusions section includes the following observations: (1) Chinese students try harder; (2) Chinese students spend more time in mathematics classes; (3) parents, teachers, and society in general expect more; and (4) Chinese teachers feel more positive about their jobs and their role in society.
