Key Competencies, Mathematics Education: Secondary Schools (Junior High, J-MATH) and (Senior High, S-GM).
Kelner, Bernard G.; Tobin, Alexander
The key student competencies of mathematics education for the School District of Philadelphia, grades seven through twelve, are presented. This book is the second of two that describe the school system's entire mathematics program. The philosophy stated is that mathematics education should prepare students with the mathematics competencies required to function successfully as a citizen, worker, and consumer. Effective living is increasingly dependent on one's proficiency in mathematics. All students can and should learn mathematics from elementary through high school. Descriptions of the key competencies provided in each course offered constitute the bulk of this booklet. Problem solving is a stated major goal in the program and is reflected in the competencies listed. (MP)
