Migraine Headaches and Marriage and Family Happiness: An Ecobehavioral Approach.
Campbell, Randy V.; And Others
This report describes Project 12-Ways, an ecobehavioral service and research project which provides residents of 10 rural counties in Illinois with services in the areas of parent training; stress reduction; marital counseling; self-control training, social support, and basic skills for children; activity training, health maintenance, and nutrition; home safety; and job-finding, problem-solving, money management, and prenatal and postnatal services to single parents. It illustrates the project through use of a case study of one target family referred to the project by the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services. Presenting problems of the target family are given, including the incapacitating, stress-induced migraine headaches experienced by the mother. Interventions and outcomes of interventions are discussed in the areas of parent training for the mother, stress reduction training, marriage counseling, and family budgeting. Improvements in marital satisfaction, the mother's professional success, the father's drinking, the mother's headache control, and the daughter's compliance are noted. Although it is recognized that outcomes cannot reliably be attributed to counseling alone, the ecobehavioral approach is recommended because it appears to work. (NB)
