Patterns of Marital Conflict Predict Children's Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors.
Katz, Lynn Fainsilber; Gottman, John M.
Developmental Psychology, v29 n6 p940-50 Nov 1993
Assessments of marital interaction during conflict resolution obtained when children were five-years-old predicted teachers' ratings of children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors when the children were eight-years-old. In particular, the "Mutually Hostile" marital interaction pattern correlated with later marital dissolution and predicted externalizing behavior patterns in children, whereas the "Husband Angry and Withdrawn" pattern predicted child internalizing behaviors.
