Perceptions of Belonging amongst Veteran Students at Elite Liberal Arts Colleges
Michael T. Albano
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Higher education in the United States has evolved to expand its reach to various diverse student populations. The student cohort in higher education that has seen exponential growth over the past few decades at elite liberal arts colleges are students who served in the military. Veteran students can contribute greatly to communities of elite liberal arts colleges as they are in no way representative of most of the student population. A sense of belonging amongst Veteran students at their institutions, or lack thereof, can lead student success or an abundance of challenges. Today, more elite liberal arts colleges rely upon their Veterans and other underrepresented student cohorts to be more than just a means to meet enrollment management goals. The diversity of a campus community is essential to the modern-day mission of an elite liberal arts college. For elite liberal arts colleges to continue to attract Veteran students they must strive to go beyond the minimum to provide Veteran students superior services, inclusive campus community involvement, and a means to support their financial success so they can fully immerse themselves in their campus's community.
