Indigenous Assessment at the Institute of American Indian Arts: A Tribal College Creates Alternative Student Learning Assessment Process
Wall, Stephen
About Campus, v27 n3 p20-25 Jul-Aug 2022
Assessment of program outcomes and student learning outcomes has become a major tool for institutional self-study and self-improvement in higher education. This article is about the student learning assessment process that was developed at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) which may have the potential for a wider audience. The author describes the history of assessment at IAIA, the Indigenous methodologies decided on for the assessment process, and the four values that were decided to guide the process: dialog, respect, community, and honoring. The Assessment Process at IAIA is a three-step process: (1) the dialog with the initial assessment group; (2) a review or meta-assessment of the initial dialog; and (3) the written report.
