The University Experience. Eight-Year Follow-up...1966 and 1967 Freshmen.
Hoelcle, Larene
This report is one of a series reporting data from an 11-year longitudinal study of two random samples of 100 students each, selected from the 1966 and 1967 entering freshman classes at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The study spans 10 years for each group. Responses from 60 of the 100 students in the 1966 sample and 54 of the 1967 group to a questionnaire administered in 1974 and 1975, respectively, are given in the present report. Three-fifths of the respondents had married and a few were separated, divorced, or remarried. Most of the group rented apartments or houses, a fifth owned their own homes, and a few lived with parents or in dormitories. Over 90 percent of the residents and 75 percent of the commuters had completed a bachelor's degree; married commuters were least likely to have completed their undergraduate work. Overall, a quarter expressed some degree of dissatisfaction with their current educational status, including a number of those who were not in school. Over four-fifths of the response groups were working eight years after they entered college, most of them full time. A majority held professional positions in education, medicine, government agencies, or industry. Of the one-fifth of the group who were not employed, 40 percent were students and 20 percent were homemakers. Most respondents described their feelings about themselves in positive or changing terms, and nearly all included positive attributes in their self-descriptions. (Author/SPG)
