Empathy can be experienced in powerful ways through art education when students explore and connect with others from different communities and their own concepts of self (Jeffers, 2009). In art education, students see images from various visual cultures and if they are to understand and become open to cultures or groups different from them, they must have empathy toward others (Jeffers, 2009). Care and empathy are relevant to art education because it can produce a sense of self when learning about art or teaching art (Noddings, 2003). The sense of self can be easily influenced by the way we treat others, and also can lead to experiences of empathy (Stout, 1999). In this article, the author describes how empathy and caring are relevant to art education within an art classroom, a hospital, an inner-city community, and a class with special needs students who create art.
