National Standards Shape Today's FCS Curriculum
Wild, Peggy
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n1 p11-12 2004
The national standards introduced in 1998 are now taught in today's family and consumer sciences (FCS) classes in secondary schools around the country. The national standards shape the curriculum by addressing content, processes, and outcomes. Over the course of the 3 years of project planning and development, every state was involved in one or more phases of the processes, and participants numbered well into the thousands. The "National Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences Education" (National Association of State Administrators, 1998) was published in May, 1998. The document highlights the alignment of standards, competencies, and process questions as well as the correlation with proficiencies for math, science, and language arts. The new standards document the shift in the FCS profession from the often negatively stereotyped technical homemaking skills to an emphasis on issues relevant to today's individuals and families. The states began incorporating the national standards into secondary programs in 1998, using them to improve existing programs, to aid in curriculum development and assessment of learning, and to meet state regulatory and funding mandates. Now that the standards have been in place for the last 5 years, it soon will be time to revisit them and ensure that they remain relevant. The early planners foresaw the need for periodic revision and recognized that it needed to be incorporated into the roles and responsibilities of current and future FCS leaders.
