Grace under Pressure
Schaeffer, Brett
Teacher Magazine, v15 n5 p32-37 Mar-Apr 2004
This article profiles author and activist Grace Llewellyn and her cult classic book, "The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education." Llewellyn's book, which she published in 1991, created a controversy as it teaches kids everything from how to convince parents to let them leave school to how to pursue their own science curricula. The book promotes homeschooling at a time when it was an impractical means to getting an education and it propelled the mainstream acceptance of homeschooling. The book led Llewellyn to co-write and edit a few other books on the subject and to start the Not Back to School Camp. Now that the homeschooling movement has lessened its momentum and has enough supporters, Llewellyn is now concentrating on a new book that tackles the question of how, within a mainstream school environment, to get the best out of an education.
