Happily Homeschooling Teens: Moving into the World.
Cohen, Cafi
This booklet is the first in a series designed to assist parents who are home-schooling their adolescent children and focuses on the socialization of home-schooled adolescents. The booklet advances the view that pivotal social experiences plus daily age-peer contact are not needed to produce socially competent individuals, that real world socialization will better prepare students for the challenges they eventually will face than will school-based socialization, and that looking at socialization as a goal may be fairly nonproductive. The articles in the booklet are: (1) "Ideas for Teen Homeschool Groups," including game days, book groups, gourmet clubs, newsletters, investment clubs, competitions, group music, classes, and physical activities; (2) "Volunteering," discussing reasons for volunteering, where to look for volunteer opportunities, working for organizations without volunteer programs, and creating a community service opportunity; (3) "Transition to the World of Work," providing ideas for researching career opportunities; and (4) "Learning to Fish: Networking," focusing on networking among home-schooling families.
