Problems and Preferences in Attending College: A Survey of Spanish Surname High School Students in the State of Washington.
Vasquez, James A.; And Others
The study explored the problems and preferences Chicano high school juniors and seniors perceived with regard to attending college. Of the 458 respondents, 430 were high school juniors and seniors, 11 were graduates who did not enroll in college during the 1976 fall, and 14 were college freshmen. Data were collected using three questionnaires: High School Student Questionnaire, Recent High School Graduate, and College Student Questionnaire. The questionnaires, similar in design, obtained information on the factors which determined the student's choice of whether or not to attend college. Analyses were conducted of the total sample, by sex, and by grade level. For analysis purposes the survey was broken down into three geographical regions: Yakima Valley, Columbia Basin, and Skagit Valley. Findings included: the most important factors in deciding to attend college were a good faculty, special curriculum related to one's interest area, and availability of financial aid; factors of least importance were the college's closeness to home and friends going to the same college; only 38.6% of the students reported being counseled during high school on career opportunities available to them, 51% of the seniors reported being counseled; 59% of the students indicated they had tentatively chosen a career, 59% of these chose one that required a college degree; females more frequently than males chose a career that required a college education; financial need and grades were the major reasons given by the 62% who had decided not to attend college.
