Designing Futuristic Nursing Programs. Highlights of the Workshop, Chiefs, Nursing Service (Bethesda, Maryland, November 10-14, 1975).
Veterans Administration, Washington, DC. Dept. of Medicine and Surgery.
Major contents of this report are the four major presentations made at a workshop designed to give 200 nursing service chiefs a uniform approach for upgrading and expanding skills and knowledge relevant to achieving the mission of the Veterans Administration (VA) Nursing Service. "Facing the Future" focuses on the VA Nursing Service as it is today, and as it is changing and reshaping into a nursing service of the 1980s. "Impact of New Roles in Nursing" presents four major areas that impact on new roles in nursing: (1) recipients of services (client, patient, resident of a long-term care facility, individual at home or in the community), (2) health care systems in which services will be provided, (3) manpower providing services, and (4) education of those providing health care services. "Accountability for Professional Self-Actualization: Continuing Challenge for Nursing" links questions of accountability to the growth and development of the nursing profession, and "Application of Systems Concepts to Health Services Management" demonstrates how the concepts of systems theory can be adapted effectively to the process of managing health service organizations and describes a sequence of five processes which are required for the management of a system: setting general goals, defining the subsystems, describing the subsystems, monitoring system performance, and adjusting the system.
