Ganguly, Ranita
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware State University
Research with adults suggests that contemplative practices such as meditation and relaxation techniques have a variety of benefits, from improving awareness to reduced stress and anxiety. Increasingly, these practices are being adapted in educational settings to foster the development of key self-regulatory skills required for improved learning outcomes. This research study determines the impact of an adapted meditative strategy and relaxation technique on anxiety and stress level through empirical evidence that supports the introduction of transcendental meditation as a contemplative practice for a stress-free university campus. This research was based on implementation of a meditation training intervention using a mobile meditation app for a period of four weeks among graduate and undergraduate university students. It was identified that short-term academic outcomes was marginally improved among students when stress level was decreased through the implemented meditation intervention. The findings of this study are relevant for schools and universities to consider as they evaluate ways in which it provides the most effective learning environment for students. The findings of this study are also pertinent to parents and families who work to provide resources and opportunities for students in sustenance of achieving academic goals and learning to manage their stress and anxiety.
