This article emphasizes the need for school policy against sexual misconduct in schools. A recent report which was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education (and required by the "No Child Left Behind" Act) estimates that 10% of our American school children are subject to some form of sexual misconduct by school employees during the course of their years in school. The report further found that teachers are the most common offenders, followed by coaches, substitute teachers, bus drivers, and teacher aides. One of the best ways to avoid these issues is to help stop sexual misconduct before it starts. According to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, all schools are required to have a policy against sex discrimination and to notify students and elementary and secondary school parents of the policy. In this article, a few ideas for ways to help ensure that students are safe from sexual misconduct by school employees are presented.
