A Century of Change: Repositioning FCS as a Foundation for Lifelong Learning
McFall, Barbara S.; Mitstifer, Dorothy I.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v97 n4 p23-29 2005
Current societal mandates for lifelong learning suggest rich opportunities for re-positioning family and consumer sciences (FCS) in education as a "foundation" for successful learning. Research confirms that quality of living (the historic mission of FCS) as a key determinant of success is inadequately addressed in today?s current social and educational realms. In this article, the history of American home economics/family and consumer sciences is reviewed and emerging opportunities and challenges in the 21st century are identified. (Contains 2 figures.)
