The Keys to Interactive Parenting Scale: A Window into Many Facets of Parenting
Comfort, Marilee; Gordon, Philip R.; Unger, Donald G.
Zero to Three, v26 n5 p37-44 May 2006
The Keys to Interactive Parenting Scale (KIPS) is a brief practical tool to assess the quality of parenting interactions across 12 parenting behaviors. Family service providers from a variety of education, health, and social service settings can use KIPS to identify parenting strengths and needs. In this article, the authors describe the rating scale and the results of a field test training of the KIPS with Parents as Teachers (PAT) and Early Head Start (EHS) family staff members. By the end of the field test training, all staff participants' scores were within 80% agreement with expert scores. On the first examination, the average reliability was 85.6% for the PAT group and 95.9% for the EHS group. Paraprofessionals' success in certification was indistinguishable from professionals. The authors describe strategies to incorporate KIPS into program services.
