Coparenting Issues Faced by Single African American Fathers and the Pursuit of Their Educational Goals
Dubuisson-Myllymaki, Chantal
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Argosy University/San Francisco Bay Area
This qualitative research study was conducted to gain insight into the coparenting experiences of African American fathers and their journey towards their educational goals. Another objective was to build on the current trends that acknowledge the increase of single father households and to provide insight into the challenges and successes of African American fathers as a nontraditional population that has been historically marginalized and negatively stereotyped. This study was designed to capture their stories within a qualitative research model. Several theoretical models comprised the interpretive framework of the study, including strength-based paradigm, the resiliency model, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, trauma informed care, and adult learning theory. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight single African American fathers. The themes that emerged from the interviews included communication as a successful coparenting strategy, abandonment of the children by the mother, trusting the parenting skills of coparenting exspouses, the effects of racial and childhood influences on present day parenting, homelessness, and educational goals. Although all fathers were involved in raising their children, the pursuit of educational goals was affected by several factors, such as the need to support the family monetarily, lack of knowledge of available resources, lack of awareness of how to prepare to be involved in institutions of higher education, and feeling that the educational system was not a true representation of their African American culture. Research is needed that would encourage greater support for single African American fathers in pursuing higher education.
