Northcroft, David
Representing a first attempt by English teachers in Scotland to address a professional mandate that they teach and assess the modes of talking and listening, this booklet outlines both the scope and the details of an oral/aural syllabus. The eight chapters in the booklet cover the following areas: (1) the oral syllabus--principles and approaches; (2) an English teaching approach to the oral syllabus; (3) the content and scope of the oral syllabus--purposes, activities, skills, and contexts; (4) methodology for the oral syllabus--the formative assessment approach, the nature of talk, and differences in talking and writing; (5) assessment of the oral syllabus--assessment through criteria, difficulties posed by the special nature of talk, and an oral assessment package; (6) listening--activities, skills, and a teaching model; (7) the teaching and assessment of group talk; and (8) the oral curriculum. Appendixes include a discussion of the syllabus and assessment guidelines, listening criteria related to grade, and a tape transcript of an unsupervised group discussion. (HOD)
