"Playing" with Science
Allen, Dave
Primary Science, n121 p21-24 Jan 2012
When faced with a multitude of tasks, any opportunity to "kill two birds with one stone" is welcome. Drama has always excited the author: as a child performing in plays, later as a student and now as a teacher directing performances and improvising within lessons. The author was lucky enough to have inspirational teachers during his primary and secondary schooling, enhancing a wide variety of foundation subjects way before the advent of "the creative curriculum." Later, during his undergraduate education course, his science lecturer also used a very kinaesthetic approach to learning. Drama in science! For many years the author had seen science shows performed for the school by visiting theatre groups, and the children had loved it. In this article, the author describes how he achieved all his goals through using plays and drama. (Contains 4 figures and 2 boxes.)
