Extending the Learning Community: Involving Parents and Families in Schools. SSTA Research Centre Report 94-09.
Saskatchewan School Trustees Association, Regina. Research Centre.
Parent involvement in their children's schooling results in improved student performance, attitudes, and self-concepts, along with decreased dropout, suspension, and absenteeism rates. Increased involvement also provides necessary community feedback to the school, encourages positive parent-teacher-student relations, and creates a more informed community. Compiled by the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association (SSTA) Research Centre, this guide serves as a resource for educators and school boards wishing to encourage parent and family involvement in education. The guide is comprised of two sections: "Setting the Stage" and "Policy Leadership." The first section details: (1) reasons for involving parents, families, and communities; (2) ways to improve school effectiveness; (3) the democratization of education; (3) school outreach; (4) policy directions; and (5) building of a learning community. The second section addresses: (1) policy development as a leadership process; (2) barriers to involvement; (3) encouragement of involvement through policy; and (4) "blueprints" for policy development. Policy samples from Saskatchewan schools are provided, along with a parent involvement program survey. A listing of 60 additional resources is included. (BGC)
