A questionnaire and focus groups employed a small sample of adults placed as adoptees in the early 1970s revealed that many were unaware of any openness policy in adoption. When faced with possible birth parent-initiated contact, subjects strongly expressed a need for choice and control and an insistence that the adoption agency retain its role as intermediary. (EV)
