Do Childminders Care?
Goddard, Ann; Smith, Celia
This report outlines the responses of registered childminders to a questionnaire concerning attitudes toward childminding and the perceived usefulness of local and national childminding associations. Members were also questioned about financial matters and conditions of work. Comparisons are made with figures from the National Childminding Association's 1978 survey on such dimensions as overminding (i.e., taking too many children into care), caring for school-age children, childminders' fees, and claims for free milk. Specifically, contents describe childminders' attitudes about training, local authority and government support, local childminders' groups, the national association, and childminding in general. Also described are findings concerning income tax, national insurance contributions, trade union membership, continuity in childminding, childminders holding two jobs, and insured childminders. Comments are made on recommendations for a comprehensive state funded day care system, direct employment of childminders, training and support for childminders, and activities of the national association. The final section offers conclusions and recommendations concerning support for childminders, subsidies to improve childminders' earnings, and the role of the National Childminding Association. (RH)
