The Forgotten Followers: A Constructivist Grounded Theory of College Students' Perceptions of Their Identified Campus Leaders
Stephanie E. Rizzo
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Central Arkansas
College students' interactions with campus leaders are a crucial element of their success and satisfaction in higher education; however, little is understood about students' identification, perceptions, or expectations of campus leaders. To help fill this gap in the literature, I led two exploratory studies in collaboration with my committee chair and a graduate of the leadership program. Our studies used a combination of quantitative and qualitative data gathered from online surveys to learn more about students' lived experiences. In our findings, students identified their advisors and faculty members as leaders on campus. Based on data that is grounded in students' perspectives, we offer a model to represent students' definitions, expectations, and goals for campus leaders. These results have numerous implications for leadership preparation and practice in higher education, as well as future research opportunities.
