An Evaluation of the Management Training and the Career Anchors of a Group of MBA/MBL Graduates.
Slabbert, Isa
The perceptions of individuals with postgraduate management training at a South African university concerning their management training, their managerial skills, and their career anchors (the dominant elements governing an individual's career choices) were studied. The theoretical framework for the study was based on the organizational/individual interaction as well as on components of managerial competence. From a study of 1,005 questionnaires, it was found that, apart from the training in some specialized subjects, the majority of respondents were satisfied with the standard of training at the business schools. The respondents indicated, however, that their job experiences were of more value than their management training as far as the development of managerial skills was concerned. Their assessment of the degree to which they possessed the requisite managerial skills was influenced by their age group, managerial level, and employer sector. The dominant career anchor of the group was identified as managerial competence. It was also found that their career anchor influenced their choice of employer sector as well as the occupation and geographical location they chose. Their career anchor also varied according to age and managerial level. The study questionnaire is appended. (Author/SW)
