The Better-than-Average Effect and 1 Corinthians 13: A Classroom Exercise

People tend to evaluate themselves more favorably than they evaluate others, a tendency that is known as the better-than-average effect (BTA effect; Alicke, 1985; Brown, 1986). In an attempt to demonstrate the concept of the BTA effect, a classroom exercise was conducted with 78 undergraduate students in an "Introduction to Psychology" course. We asked students to compare themselves to others in regard to positive and negative interpersonal behaviors derived from the Apostle Paul's discourse on love in 1 Corinthians 13. The results of the survey indicated that the BTA effect emerged, even when utilizing Scripture to compare one's self to another. This article includes a discussion as to how professors across different academic disciplines can conduct the same or a similar classroom exercise in order to teach students about the BTA effect and its potential detrimental impact on life at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and spiritual levels.
