The Impact of Interscholastic Sports Participation on Dual Enrollment Achievement among Female Students
Guerry, Nicole
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, North Greenville University
In the last half century, many researchers have studied the impact of athletics on academic achievement. Despite there being many studies that examine the impact of athletics on academic achievement, researchers have not been able to reach a consensus on the positive or negative effects of athletic participation. To date, there has not been a study conducted that examines the impact of athletics on dual enrollment achievement among female upperclassmen students. As a result, the current research examines the dual enrollment achievement of those students who identify as student-athletes versus the dual enrollment achievement of those students who are not student-athletes. This study also examines if the success of female students within dual enrollment courses is the same for those student-athletes who participate in one sport versus those who participate in multiple sports. Through the analysis of female student-athletes and male student-athletes, it was found that athletic participation has a more substantial impact on female academic achievement in core dual enrollment courses than for male student-athletes. The second analysis determined that female student-athletes have higher academic achievement in core dual enrollment courses than male students who do not participate in interscholastic sports. The third analysis determined that female student-athletes have higher academic achievement within core dual enrollment courses as compared to female students who do not participate in interscholastic sports. This study also found that the number of sports in which a female student participates does not impact academic achievement in core dual enrollment courses.
